migration success!
I did it!
I migrated whollyKao over from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. The design looks pretty much the same, but it’s now a self-hosted site. Am I glad I made the switch? You bet.
This week, I tinkered with php, MySQL, and XML – all things that were Greek to me. It’s been both frustrating and rewarding, but I’ve learned so much. And I have a new-found appreciation for all you developers/coders out there.
Luckily, I didn’t have to make the switch on my own. I have blogger friends to thank for answering my questions. And I couldn’t have done it without Google and the WordPress forums. They’re magic.
So thanks to everyone who helped me through this process! Couldn’t have done it without you!

Wow, congrats on your move!
I imagine you have a lot more options, because of all the various plugins?
I tried to do it myself yesterday but at some point I got really frustrated and deleted everything again^^
Congratulations on the move! Looks great
Thanks Julia!
Hi whollyKao
thanks for posting those links. I’m in the process of migration and so glad I found your site (oh, and not just for the .com/.org information but also for the popsicles!)
Good luck with the migration! I was def stumbling thru the process, but I learned a lot. Let me know if you have Qs at all.
Thanks for the advice, Esther! I will definitely check out the links and be google-ing lots
Nice work! Glad you got it moved over successfully!
Thanks Steph!! good luck when you make the move! Let me know if you have Qs about the process.
yay! congrats on the big move! its well worth all the work and hair-pulling!!!
Haha there definitely were a couple of hair pulling/’I wish I could undo that’ moments. I kept wondering if it was that hard for everyone?? Did it help for you to know code, when you migrated your site?
congrats on the move! the site looks great.
i just bought hosting and a domain name to play with. hoping to get familiar with wordpress.org. i am a pretty decent with front-end code, but am lost with php, mysql, etc. any good resources you used for your move that you’d recommend?
Hey Kim,
So I think you’re going to be better than I am with the coding part of wordpress.org. Most of what you’ll be doing is messing with the CSS, which is pretty much the same as editing the custom CSS in wordpress.com. The php/MySQL/XML stuff – I was clueless about all that a week ago. Luckily, there are a lot of wordpress.org forums and articles dedicated to helping you troubleshoot and figure out what to do. You can essentially google your problem and someone out there will have already solved it at some point in the past (which means you can copy/past their code into your files).
These articles were pretty helpful before I started the migration:

And of course if you have Qs about the process, feel free to email me. whollykao (at) gmail.com. Good luck!
Congrats on the new space and your success at moving, virtually
Can I ask you why you made the move? I’m just curious as to your reasons. Oh and mini me is so freakin’ cute!
Thanks Carson! I’m going to email you w/ answers to your Qs (figured it’s easier than just replying on a comment).
Yay! So glad you got migrated easily. After some bad luck & technology issues, I’m almost done moving my blog to a new host. Can’t wait to get back to blogging!
Woohoo! Thanks for answering my Qs! You were super helpful. And good luck to you with the blog move — I bet you have a bunch of posts that you’ve been itching to write!!
