I recently saw this post on designmom.com for DIY Skinny Ties. You convert a regular tie into a skinny tie. It sounded fun, and Jeff happened to have a couple ‘reject’ ties for the occasion.
If you’ve got a seam ripper, good scissors, and an iron, you are all set to make your own skinny tie.
Here’s one of the ties, at normal size, which is about 3-inches wide.

You start by ripping the seam out of the back of the tie.

Then, cut the white stabilizer material inside to about 1.5-inches thick. Cut the outer silk material to fits the stabilizer’s new width.
Iron the fabric so that the fold falls in the right place. Sew the middle seam together, and you’re done.
One thing I struggled with is making the triangular point on the tie centered. This first one I did was off (see pic below), but the second turned out much better. I think I just need to get more ties to practice on. DesignMom said that silk ties were the easiest to work with, but I’m itching to try this out on some tweed ties.

Here’s the second tie, in it’s original form:

And here it is, as a skinny tie.

I’m trying to convince Jeff that skinny ties are fun to wear. Our friend Daniel likes them, but thinks skinny ties are more suited for ‘skinny jeans’ kind of guys. I don’t think that’s necessarily true.
