I’ve been on a crochet and knitting kick. I think it’s weather-related – maybe I just like how cozy it makes me feel to be making cozy things. And this has recently extended to Christmas decor. I stumbled on this crochet bauble tutorial on Meet Me At Mike’s blog and got inspired. I was looking for cost efficient ways to jazz up our Christmas tree, which was looking kinda sparse because we got a bigger tree than last year and didn’t have enough decorations to go around. I only spent 3$ on these baubles, and used the yarn I already had at home.
Meet Me at Mike’s tutorial is great. However, it’s designed for giant baubles, and I had bought small ones. So I adapted it to fit the size I bought. And then I went to town! These are easy to make – each one took me about 20 minutes. It’s also a great way to use up extra bits of yarn that’s lying around the house. The brighter the colors, the better!

what you’ll need
yarn (I used worsted weight yarn)
4mm crochet hook
small glass baubles (2-inches diameter)
special stitches
treble crochet (tutorial is here)
steps
R1: make a slip knot.
R2: chain 5, then slip stitch to form a ring.
R3: chain 3, treble crochet 15x into ring (15 treble stitches total), slip stitch to close ring.
R4: chain 3, then treble 2 stitches into base of chain you just made. Skip the next stitch. Treble 3 into the next stitch. Skip the next. Continue in this manner until you reach the beginning again. Slip stitch into the 3rd stitch of the original chain 3 to closewhen you reach your starting point.
R5 (increase): chain 3, then treble 2 stitches into the base of chain you just made. Treble 3 into the closest gap between clusters, then chain 1. Continue by trebling 3 into gap, and then chain 1. Slip stitch to close when you reach your starting point.
R6 (decrease): chain 3, then treble 2 stitches into the base of chain you just made. Treble 3 into the closest gap between clusters. Continue by trebling 3 into the gaps between clusters. Slip stitch to close when you reach your starting point.
R7: pull the loose yarn end thru to the right side of the crochet piece. Then pull the crocheted cover onto the bauble (the loose yarn is dangling outside the bauble).
Chain 1 and pull thread tight. Double crochet once into each gap in the round below. Make sure to pull yarn tight with each stitch. Slip stitch when you reach your starting point, then weave the ends in.
And you’re done!

You can add whatever accents you want to your crocheted bauble. I sewed on some gold leaves to the gray one I did: it made it look more elegant.
